Author Biography

Wijnand J. Swart studied at the University of Stellenbosch, obtaining a B.Sc. degree in Forestry/Nature Conservation in 1980 and a M.Sc. Agric. (cum laude) degree in Plant Pathology in 1986.  He was awarded a Ph.D. degree in 1991 at the University of the Free State, South Africa. 
Prof Swart was a Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of the Free State from 2000-2023 when he retired.
His research broadly focused on adopting a “total systems approach” to plant health management by utilizing the functional diversity of fungi and bacteria, above- and below ground, as bio-indicators of soil and plant health.    In so doing, innovative crop production and protection strategies can be developed with particular emphasis on beneficial microbes that influence both plant and soil health.
Prof Swart has authored or co-authored 115 scientific publications in highly accredited scientific journals and presented 185 papers at national and international congresses. 
During his career at the UFS he supervised/co-supervised a total 60 M.Sc. and Ph.D. graduates. 
Wijnand is currently retired and spends his time as a science communicator and writer with a keen interest in microbiology and the vital role microbes play in everyday life.
Through his past research work, he has explored how microorganisms influence health, agriculture, soil fertility, food production, and environmental sustainability.
Passionate about making complex scientific concepts accessible to a broader audience, Wijnand aims to bridge the gap between academic science and practical, real-world applications.
